| Bootleg Canyon |
Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park is an extensive network of World Class Downhill and Cross Country mountain bike trails located in Boulder City, Nevada. The area has been visited by riders from as far away as Japan and Germany and has been written up in magazines around the world. The International Mountain Bike Association as certified one of the XC trails as an Epic Ride, a title given out only 18 times so far. Boulder City is located approximately 40 minutes south east of Las Vegas by the Hoover Dam and beautiful Lake Mead. The riding season is year round, however, temperatures average around 100 degrees Fahrenheit from June through August, so mid-day riding is difficult. If you do decide to come in the summer be sure to bring plenty of water and maybe some head lamps for a night ride. Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year-round. Its huge lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. Three of America's four desert ecosystems--the Mojave, the Great Basin, and the Sonoran Deserts--meet in Lake Mead NRA. As a result, this seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. |

| Mount Charleston |
The Mount Charleston Wilderness is located within the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas, Nevada. The Spring Mountains get their name from the many natural springs in the area, which are one of the many sensitive resources found here. Here in the high country you'll find a forested oasis and relief from the Mojave Desert heat of southern Nevada, where summer temperatures often rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mount Charleston Wilderness extends across the highest elevations of the Spring Mountains Range, including the highest point, Charleston Peak at 11,918 feet. Short, steep-walled canyons penetrate the range, which is characterized by some 18,000 acres of bristlecone pine, the largest such stand in the Intermountain West. With the combination of range in habitat, unique geology and microclimates, this area supports several endemic plant communities, plants that are found no where else in the world.
Some 40 miles of trails include many miles along the spine of the Spring Mountains. Elevation changes and the virtual absence of flat terrain make for strenuous but beautiful hiking.

| Valley of Fire |
The Valley Of Fire was dedicated as a state park in 1935. Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park. The name refers to the spectacular red sandstone formations that are exposed in great abundance here.
The multi-shaded red and golden yellow sandstone cliffs and rock are part of the Navajo Sandstone Formation that is found throughout Southern Nevada and in this part of the Southwest.
The Navajo Sandstone is this is the same formation that is found in the Red Rock Canyon, along the North Shore Road of Lake Mead at places like 'Redstone' and in nearby places such as Utah's Zion National Park to name just a few. The bright red colors in the sandstone is a by product of the minerals in the rock, principally iron oxides.
This 46,000 acre park is located 50 to 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas (depending on the route taken), and just east of the Overton Arm of Lake Mead NRA. The Valley of Fire is a place of rare and sublime beauty which people have been attracted to for thousands of years. This is evidenced by the large number of Petroglyphs found in several places throughout this park.
The Valley of Fire was once the bottom of a deep ocean basin that eventually to become part of a vast desert which existed about 150 to 180 million years ago.
Continued sedimentary deposition buried once shifting desert sands deep within the earth. Approximately 65 million years ago orogenic activity associated with the eastern Pacific subduction zone along the North American Pacific coast, caused tremendous faulting, uplifting and shifting of the regions earths crust. This resulted in the tremendous diversity in geological formations found throughout the Great Basin and vicinity. |
